The Langes Messer is a remarkably versatile weapon—capable of powerful cuts, fast defensive actions, close-range grappling, disarms, and even using the hilt itself as a weapon.
In this seminar, Steaphen Fick will use the Langes Messer as our primary tool for exploring the fundamentals of fighting with a one-handed cutting sword. Rather than focusing on the plays of a single historical manuscript, we'll look at the broader fighting concepts that make these weapons work and how those ideas can be applied against a resisting opponent.
We'll explore how to attack while remaining protected, defend and immediately return with a cut, control the opponent's weapon, and safely protect both the hands and body from counter-cuts. As the distance closes, we'll also work with some of the elements that make historical Messer fencing so distinctive: grappling, disarms, weapon control, and using the pommel and hilt at close range.
